On behalf of Atlantic Biogas, we are pleased to have secured planning permission from Aberdeenshire Council for a CO₂ recovery unit to support Atlantic Biogas’ existing anaerobic digestion (AD) facility at Savock Farm in West Pitmillan, near Ellon.
The site of the consented development is home to an existing 2.5MW agricultural AD facility, which produces biomethane gas to be exported to the grid. This provides clean and sustainable power as an alternative to fossil fuels for consumers to heat their homes and businesses. The existing AD facility is located on land within the Savock Farm estate and its feedstock is sourced from the estate itself, promoting a zero-waste operation.
For the biogas produced by the AD process to be of sufficient quality for the national grid, CO₂ needs to be removed from the biogas mixture, a process which is undertaken in the existing biomethane upgrade plant on site. The consented recovery unit will capture and purify the CO₂ which has been removed from the biogas mixture via the upgrade plant, meaning that this byproduct can exported off site and used in the food and beverage industries as a recovered product, even further promoting the circular economy surrounding the Savock Farm estate facilitated by Atlantic Biogas.
