Do I need planning permission?

22 August 2024

There is a good chance that if you want to build something, you will need planning permission to do so. Planning permission is a legal requirement for all sorts of built development, from house extensions to wind farms and everything in between. To find out if you need planning permission for whatever it is that you want to develop in the first place, you should contact your local council. But how do you get planning permission?

The level of work required to put together a robust planning application and engage properly with key stakeholders will vary depending on the nature of the development which is being proposed. In many jurisdictions, development proposals of a certain size and scale are determined by committees made up of elected representatives following a period of public consultation, meaning that in addition to a professional planning application which is well managed throughout the planning process, strategic engagement with local communities, politicians and others is necessary.

This is where we at Gravis, as a market-leading integrated Planning and Strategic Communications consultancy active across the UK and Ireland, are uniquely placed to help.

Our Planning Consultants are equipped with the experience and skills to advise you on all matters relating to planning, planning applications, planning policy, environmental impact, planning enforcement, planning appeals and much more. We have consultants that specialise in energy (including renewables), transport, housing, retail, leisure, mixed use and masterplanning, waste management, education, commercial, advertising and healthcare. This expertise is complemented by strong working relationships with local planning authorities and government agencies involved in the planning process, which ensures that feedback from statutory consultees can be addressed quickly to allow planning applications to be processed efficiently.

Our Strategic Communications team is equally experienced in the field of communications, stakeholder engagement and public relations in the context of planning. We are adept in communications strategy, stakeholder mapping and engagement, community consultation and event management, managing media relations, social media and online consultation, publications and multi-media animation, community benefit and social value, and political engagement. We possess an exceptional knowledge of politics and political institutions in the UK and Ireland at a local, regional, national and European level, and a breadth and depth of relationships with parties across the political spectrum to match it. All of the above means that we are very capable of generating and crystallising the political will that is often needed to progress major development proposals, as well as public support and industry buy-in.

Although our Planning and Strategic Communications teams often work together, each can also be appointed on a stand-alone basis.

If you are in need of planning permission and planning advice, get in touch with us today to start your journey toward making your development proposal a reality.
