Gravis support Translink in completion of major rail infrastructure upgrades along North Coast

12 December 2023

This month, we were pleased to mark the completion of Translink’s University and Dhu Varren Platform Extension projects, which received planning approval from Causeway Coast & Glens Borough Council in January of this year. The project involved extending the platforms at University and Dhu Varren Stations, to improve operational efficiency and passengers' overall experience of travelling by train.

The previous platforms at these stations could only cater for trains that were three carriages in length. The extensions of these platforms now allow for six car train sets to service the stations, offering more space, increased capacity for passengers and walk-through carriages. Both platforms were extended to 150m in length to facilitate the larger train sets. In the process of these works, a new acoustic barrier was erected at University Station, and a new DDA-compliant access ramp was installed at Dhu Varren to improve accessibility for passengers.

Gravis worked closely alongside Charles Brand, who carried out the construction works on behalf of Translink, to ensure that planned works were communicated strategically to all stakeholders and completed with minimal disruption to the local community. Three public consultation events were held at Ulster University, Coleraine to give residents and passengers a chance to learn more about the proposal and ask questions to members of the project team. During temporary line closures during the works, bus substitutions were in place to ensure that passengers were still able to commute to their destinations at these times.

Both University and Dhu Varren Stations are now fully open to the public.
