Permission granted for major social housing scheme in Belfast

2 July 2024

We are delighted to have received planning approval from Belfast City Council’s Planning Committee, on behalf of Radius Housing and Choice Housing in partnership, for a social housing development at Glen Road in Belfast comprising 260 dwellings.

The new development at Glen Road will predominantly consist of 2 bed, 3 person units, which are considered the most flexible in meeting the needs of several occupant types. It aligns with the Belfast Agenda’s goal of increasing the population of the city by 66,000 people by 2035 to create a host of economic and social benefits. The Glen Road site is also a short walk from a range of amenities including the Glider public transport corridor and green spaces such as the Colin Glen.

With the site of the development being located on the slope of Belfast’s iconic Black Mountain, there was a requirement to work with its challenging topography in the layout and design of the scheme. The steep slope along the northern boundary is eased with 2.5 storey split level houses. The orientation of dwellings has been carefully considered and varied elevation treatments will be used to maximise solar gain and help achieve maximum energy efficiency for all dwellings. Several open spaces, including a playpark and a garden allotment area, are connected by footpaths and are directly overlooked by residents to create safe and welcoming communal areas across the site. The elevation of the site also means that panoramic views of Belfast are created for residents.

We look forward to seeing the development of this fantastic scheme, which represents a major step in providing the high-quality social housing that is greatly needed in Belfast.
