New Water Treatment and Recycling Facility approved for Ballyrashane Creamery

Ballyrashane is a vital local employer, with over 210 staff, and their supply chain stretches across the community, with over 700 local businesses involved in supplying and supporting production on site. It produces substantial quantities of butter, pasteurised milk and cheese which are sold within local businesses, high street stores and across the world.

Since a merger in 2019, Ballyrashane has become one of eight Lakeland Dairies manufacturing sites in Ireland, four of which are based in Northern Ireland. Ballyrashane is a key member of the Lakeland Dairies co-operative, which helps to support over 3,200 dairy farming livelihoods (300 of which are in the Causeway Coast & Glens area).

The project involves building a new water treatment and recycling facility located in the background of an existing anaerobic digestion (AD) plant. The Creamery and this new facility will be linked via a transfer station on the existing Creamery site.

The purpose of this project is to replace the existing treatment plant that services the needs of the Creamery and to pioneer a more sustainable operation through the inclusion of a water recycling plant. New underground pipes will also increase the efficiency of how water is recycled at Ballyrashane and greatly reduce the need for tractors to be used for transporting water between the Creamery and AD plant.
