Planning permission secured for 129-hectare Kildallan Solar Farm in Co. Westmeath

12 June 2025

On behalf of Harmony Solar, we are pleased to have secured planning permission for a 129-hectare solar farm in Co. Westmeath. This included successfully defending a third-party appeal, with An Bord Pleanála ruling in favour of our client.

The consented solar farm aligns with a number of key objectives within Westmeath County Council’s Development Plan 2021-2027, such as supporting the development of solar PV infrastructure, and supporting Ireland’s commitments to meeting climate action targets as outlined in national energy policy.

Pre-application consultation was undertaken with local residents and landowners to gather feedback on the development, which helped to inform and shape the final plans submitted to Westmeath County Council. The applicant responded to all feedback received to address any concerns.

The new solar farm will also improve biodiversity in the project area, through measures such as the planting of hedgerows comprising native species to support local ecosystems, the installation of 12 No. bat boxes and 15 No. bird boxes to promote the wellbeing of local species, and enabling sheep to continue grazing the fields when the solar farm is in operation to maintain these areas as semi-natural grassland.
